Biko

Trivia: Garcia-Hernandez

The Municipality of Garcia-Hernandez is located 67.1 km away from Tagbilaran City or an hour of travel before you can reach the said town. This 13, 575 hectares town, is lying halfway between Valencia and Jagna along the southern coastline of Bohol. It has an increasing population of more than 24,000, where most of the people's source of income rely on agriculture and fishery. The town is also wealthy for its mineral resources such as limestone rocks. It is one of the major sintering suppliers of the Philippines, making it to be known as the "Limestone Country of Bohol".


HISTORY

Sinugbuan, was a progressive barrio of the town of Jagna. Finding it difficult to transact business in Jagna because of the distance and lack of transportation at that time, people of  Sinugbuan, so as the neighboring barrios, supported to petition for independence from the said town.

In March 11, 1858, Sinugbuan (now known as Lungsodaan) together with other barrios such as Saub, Abijilan, Canayaon, Ulbujan, Cayam, Tabuan, Cambuyo and Pasong, obtained independence and formed a municipality with the help of the Spanish Friars, Fr. Jose Garcia, Parish Priest of Guindulman, Bohol; and Fr. Narciso Hernandez, Parish Priest of Loay, Bohol. In honor of these two priests, the town was named after them, thus became the Municipality of Garcia-Hernandez. In commemorating the independence of the town, people begun to celebrate there foundation day every 27th day of May and they call it, Sinugbuan Festival.

Garcia-Hernandez also celebrates their annual town fiesta every June 24, in honor of their Patron Saint, St. John the Baptist.
