Trivia: Garcia-Hernandez

The Municipality of Garcia-Hernandez is located 67.1 km from Tagbilaran City, approximately an hour's travel to reach the town. This 13,575-hectare municipality lies halfway between Valencia and Jagna along the southern coastline of Bohol. It has a growing population of over 24,000, with most residents relying on agriculture and fishery as their primary sources of income. The town is also rich in mineral resources, particularly limestone, making it one of the major sintering suppliers in the Philippines and earning it the title "Limestone Country of Bohol."

HISTORY

Sinugbuan was once a progressive barrio of the town of Jagna. Due to the difficulties in conducting business in Jagna caused by its distance and the lack of transportation at the time, the people of Sinugbuan, along with neighboring barrios, supported a petition for independence from Jagna.

On March 11, 1858, Sinugbuan (now known as Lungsodaan) and other barrios, including Saub, Abijilan, Canayaon, Ulbujan, Cayam, Tabuan, Cambuyo, and Pasong, gained independence and formed a new municipality. This was achieved with the help of Spanish friars, Fr. Jose Garcia, Parish Priest of Guindulman, Bohol, and Fr. Narciso Hernandez, Parish Priest of Loay, Bohol. In honor of these two priests, the town was named Garcia-Hernandez.

To commemorate the town's independence, the people began celebrating their foundation day on May 27, calling it the Sinugbuan Festival.

Garcia-Hernandez also celebrates its annual town fiesta every June 24 in honor of its patron saint, St. John the Baptist.

One of them is the San Miguel Archangel Parish also known as Jagna Church. The parish of Jagna and its convento was established in 1631 with the help of the Jesuit priest, José Sanchez (Josef Zanzini [1616-92]). Both church and convento must have been built by the Recollects who assumed administration of Bohol with the departure of the Jesuits in 1768. The present church of Jagna is greatly renovated after suffering from different natural calamities and even fire. The church's interior is also renovated and is especially known for its state-of-the-art and manually crafted ceiling that depicts the different religio...
